Mads Hallas Bjerg, founder of online art appraisal service Mearto.com, said old paintings could be worth good money, provided they are originals or limited-edition prints: “Never remove the frame until you have had it checked out. This could devalue or damage the work, and the frame itself could be valuable.”
When assessing jewellery, the difference between real stones and fake is difficult to spot with an untrained eye: “Never give gems away until they’ve been assessed.”
The vintage watch market is ticking over nicely, Bjerg added. “Lesser-known brands such as Universal Genève, Enicar, and even vintage Movado watches can be worth serious cash, as well as Rolex, Omega or Patek Philippe.”
Saucy Edwardian postcards can be valuable, while some believe that Harry Potter models will be the new Star Wars collectibles: “It is worth hanging onto these and their original packaging.”
Comic books from the 1970s or earlier also attract collectors, with Amazing Fantasy #15, which contained Spider-Man’s first appearance, selling for more than $1million in 2011.
Mearto offers an online appraisal service connecting sellers with auction houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s.
